There was good news this May for student nurses and midwives. Minister for Health Simon Harris has said that the Health Service Executive (HSE) will offer full-time contracts to all graduating nurses and midwives.
The minister made the promise when speaking at the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation annual conference in Wexford.
Mr Harris added that the health service would contact all student nurses and midwives in writing to explain this and outline the next steps.
Furthermore, the minister stated that the Health Service Executive will work to convert agency employees to direct employees.
Difficult years for nurses and midwives
Mr Harris said nurses and midwives have gone through several difficult years because of budget cuts.
Martina Harkin-Kelly, president of the Irish Nurses & Midwives Organisation (INMO) said that they welcomed the HSE three year workforce plan.
She added that it is a priority to make sure nurses who receiving their training in Ireland stay here. Therefore employers need to approach graduates early to offer posts.
